Hi Corey,
From a purely musical line of development I think that John Coltrane was coming from a 2nd tier level. What do you think?
I am with you brother
Miles Davis Live/Evil album.
I was 16 when I found this in a friend’s parent’s record collection. I sensed that another form of consciousness created these sounds. Years later I thought that this was my first taste of what integral “sounds like”:
Deftones, Clutch, Tool, System of a Down.
To this day I will see these bands every chance I get. Heavy metal puts me in touch with some kind of energy I can’t find anywhere else. Even at 37 I still need the camaraderie and cathartic release of a moshpit every few months.
The Blues.
I was lucky enough to play bass for 2 incredibly good blues bands for about a decade. When blues music hits a flow state there is nothing else like it in the world. Blues done well has led to some of the highest peak experiences of my life. At the risk “explaining it away,” it acknowledges the universality of human suffering but then makes you move to celebrate it.
@ekaraksa Do you happen to have a spotify subscription?
@rmacleodb Great mix there.
If anyone is on spotify, my profile is matthewhudkins.
Greetings,
no, I don’t have. For finding new things I use youtube and friends advices, for listening I buy or download in a high quality.
One day i might make a playlist of your recommendations for shits and giggles
Wow…Loved the Paul McCartney Carpool Karaoke…That was something like an “extended cut”. I was just thinking about the song “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey” the other day when spending most of the day taking in the Apollo 11 Anniversary hoopla. There has been so much music in my life I think it would be easier to list the music that hasn’t had a profound influence, but this Paul McCartney song…recorded one year and 3 months after Apollo 11…(on my 7th birthday, or so said Wikipedia five minutes ago!) seriously transports me back to 1971 in a huge way. And of course the Beatles will always have a similar effect on me.
Of the ones that have been listed, Pink Floyd’s Animals, the Beatles’ Abbey Road, Jimi Hendrix, Milton Nascimento, and Chico Buarque have had a profound influence on me. Here are a few more.
Love’s Forever Changes
Jorge Ben’s A Tabua de Esmeralda
Sly and the Family Stone’s There’s a Riot Goin’ On
I made a Spotify playlist of some of the more obscure selections in here if anyone wanted to follow.
Two new selections I enjoy:
RIP
I thought I would add a few more of my own mixes to the list, since they all include artists who have deeply influenced me over the years.
This first one was a somewhat experimental mix, called Dark Matter.
Playing with the tension between soothing and menacing, soft and jagged, glossy and glitchy, this is a soundtrack for psychonauts, an adventure through shifting tones, textures, and soundscapes. Do not listen if you suffer from irrational fears of the future. Experiences of bliss, involuntary dancing, and spontaneous dropping of the bodymind are normal. If any of these symptoms persist, continue use and consult your metaphysician immediately.
DOSE: One listen (approx. 38 minutes)
DIRECTIONS: Apply one (1) dose to your earholes whenever you would like to enhance your experience of:
Driving
Exercising
Working
Copulating
Introspecting*
*Headphones highly recommended.
WARNING: Do not listen if you suffer from irrational fears of the future. Experiences of bliss, involuntary dancing, and spontaneous dropping of the bodymind are normal. If any of these symptoms persist, continue use and consult your metaphysician immediately.

This next one is called ®evolutions, an epic 2-hour politically conscious hip hop mixtape.
“A revolution without dancing is not a revolution worth having.” — V for Vendetta
This mix was created in the spirit of the great protest songs of the 1960’s, channeled through one of the most ®evolutionary art forms of our time: socially and spiritually conscious hip hop (don’t worry, there are plenty of rock and roll touch-points scattered throughout for the uninitiated). This set covers a very wide range of emotional content, from frustration to optimism to outrage. I also attempted to weave a variety of perspectives together, from premodern to modern to postmodern, as a demonstration of how these different points of view can all “fit together” into a single cohesive aesthetic experience.
Every song in this mix is carefully wrapped around two main thematic pillars, which should be instantly recognizable to the Integral crowd:
Wake up. Rise up.
It helps to remember the story of the Buddha, the story of a man who sat and sat and sat some more, until it was finally time to stand up.
It’s time to stand. It’s time to dance.
